Dear Friend,
Kevin and Sarah (not their real names) had what they called a blowout on Sunday.
Not their first. And won't be their last.
But this one stung differently.
Because when the dust settled, Sarah said the words that land like a gut punch:
“The biggest thing is wondering if I matter at all.”
That stopped Kevin cold.
He wasn’t trying to make her feel small.
He was triggered.
And in his effort not to get defensive, he ended up talking at her instead of with her.
That’s the moment where so many couples lose control. When disagreement turns into competition.
Kevin said:
“I don’t know how to protect myself. I don’t know how to feel safe in these conversations.”
It was a good realization. I told him that.
He wants guardrails.
And without them, his defensiveness will always win.
Because without safety, curiosity disappears.
And without curiosity, there’s no repair.
Repair flips from “Who started it?” to “Who’s willing to end this?”
Here’s what I told them:
Start by getting aligned on feeling safe enough to have the conversation.
That means, pause.
PHYSICALLY de-escalate your body.
Check your tone.
Sit down.
Reach for their hand.
Do something that says we’re safe.
Only then can you see that conflict isn’t the enemy, disconnection is.
Your physical presence has to signal safety.
And it’s how you show up that reminds your partner the ground beneath you both is stable enough for hard conversations.
That’s how you rebuild trust.
That’s how you stop fighting to be right and start fighting for each other.
If you (or your man) struggle to stay calm, grounded, and in control during conflict, it’s time to do something about it.
I just launched my new men’s group, The Chosen Brotherhood.
It’s where we tackle exactly this.
We work on staying grounded when things get messy.
Because when your emotions are steady, your relationship finally feels safe again.
In solutions and strength,
Jonathan
